walking on the Downs

The English like to talk about the weather. It's pretty much a national past time. As it has been the most rubbish start to summer on record it's been a favourite topic.
Despite the weather, my friend Gav from Sydney and I decided to go walking on the South Downs a few weeks ago.
The South Downs National Park is England's newest National Park, and one part of it called Devil's Dyke is a short bus ride from my place in Brighton.
As this was my first experience of walking (as opposed to bushwalking in Australia) I wasn't sure what to expect.
It was so different to what I'm used to - at home you have to make sure you take enough water, have proper shoes and stick to the paths and follow directions at all times.
The Downs didn't have any signs to let you know where to go, everyone was meandering all over the grassy slopes and the main objective was to walk from one pub to another. I loved it!
I'll go again soon armed with a map (I really thought it would be sign posted!) and hopefully blue skies and next time we'll actually find the pub we were aiming for.
