the bigger picture
David Hockney - 'the most popular British artist' could possibly have been the name of this exhibition instead of The Bigger PIcture. Hockney's latest retrospective was advertised months before the opening in London and I'm sure the rest of the UK on the sides of buses, in tube stations and in every major English paper.
And it did not disappoint! I knew the name but embarrassingly didn't know much about his paintings apart from them being really colourful and mostly of English countryside and some American landscapes.
What I would do to have one on my wall. I absolutely loved them - the colour, the simplicity (not all), and the themes - he would often go back to the same spot during the year and paint a scene in the many seasons. I especially loved his attachment to a particular cut tree that he visited again and again. That was the postcard that I bought to hang on my wall to remind me of this exhibition.
And he has done a lot of work via painting on the ipad which is really interesting but it didn't grab me as much as his paintings. I also felt the same with the photo montages he has created in the States. I liked them, and they were really cool to see in the exhibition but it's the colourful landscapes painted in the last ten years here in the UK that I loved the most.
You can check them all out here, if you like. I'm planning on getting the exhibition book soon!
