the giraffe behind the door...

I've always had a love-hate relationship with zoos. I understand their importance - they teach the public about animals and animal welfare and do a lot of important research and conservation work.
Even though I know all of this I still feel sad when I go to a zoo. I haven't been for about 12 years for that reason.
I've never been able to articulate how exactly I feel about them, but New York photographer Asmita Parelkar has managed to do it with her photo story The Giraffe Behind the Door.
Asmita was unsettled by the Bronx Zoo in New York where the enclosures are painted with dioramas that recreated the animals natural environment.
She questions the need for zoos in the 21st Century - if the goal is educating the public then aren't there enough documentaries and websites that do that now?
