tidal fine art photography

Salmon fishery, Solway Firth. 27 and 28 March 2006. Low water 5.20pm, high water 12 noon

Photographer: Michael Marten

My most favourite thing on Saturdays is to get the Guardian Weekend paper for the Guardian Weekend magazine. The rest of the paper takes me the whole week to read but the magazine I read cover to cover straight away!

They feature a photo story most weeks and this week there was an amazing series by English photographer Michael Marten of English coastline at high and low tide.

It sounds boring but check out the images - seeing the high tide shot right next to low tide is remarkable. Marten has impeccably lined up both shots so they have been shot in exactly the same spot - that in itself is a feat!

This project took Marten eight years - he says he became a "student of tides". This series is a fantastic example of a study that could only be shown with photography. Video, or even being there in person to witness the tides wouldn't show the stark contrasts between the tides. Amazing! I will be buying the book when it is released later this year.
